The Christian Center is the oldest social service agency in the Berkshires. Founded on the West Side of Pittsfield 127 years ago, our original purpose was to help an influx of immigrants and post-Civil War AfricanAmericans to navigate the many challenges of their new lives. Today, the Christian Center continues to help those in our community who struggle to navigate through adversity or hardship.
During 2019, The Christian Center has served over 12,000 meals, distributed 162,847 pounds of food through our Food Pantry, and had 3,300 visits to our free clothing boutique. In addition, we provided 45 kits of needed household items for those transitioning back to independent living from shelters, recovery centers or jail. We also assisted our clients to secure access to housing, health care, and other services. Altogether, more than 5,000 individuals and families received vital assistance at The Center this year.
With a small staff, we rely on the support of a variety of community members to function effectively. Throughout the year, we have volunteers, work-study students, those required to do community service, and men and women from programs such as BFair, BArc, Pathways and the public schools who aid our efforts. These individuals learn and grow during their time here and our entire community benefits from their engagement and experience.
At The Christian Center, we endeavor to help each client to live his or her best life. Our success and that of our clients depends on the generosity of community members like you. Won’t you join us this year in our ongoing mission to uplift and empower those members of our community who most need our support?
